God and the Large Hadron Collider - By: Rodney J Smith

There is a popular misconception that science and religion are fundamentally at odds with one another. I beg to differ - both disciplines are based on theories about what causes various observable phenomena, and both require an element of faith to activate understanding.

For example, scientists observe two distant, massive objects interacting across the void of space and conclude that there is a force of attraction between them. They call the force "gravity" and formulate a set of equations to describe the effect. We cannot see gravity, but from its observed effects we infer its existence. Similarly, those with the eyes of faith observe historical events unfold and see the hand of God at work.

Scientists have recently completed work on the Large Hadron Collider, a multi-billion dollar experiment to try to replicate conditions at the time of the Big Bang in an attempt to gain valuable insights into the fundamental nature of the universe and the matter it's made of. It's somewhat paradoxical that something so big is needed in order to study particles which are so tiny, but there you go. In essence it is a huge-scale laboratory designed to observe what happens when atomic particles collide with each other.

There is another laboratory which is of even greater value: a human life. Here we see the same paradox at work, for even though God is infinitely big and powerful, the realm where his greatest work is accomplished is within the human heart. Unfortunately there is no microscope capable of revealing spiritual changes in an individual, yet the effect of those changes can be readily observed, and the one big advantage when a human is the experiment's subject rather than a Quark, is that we can interrogate the human to find out what has happened. In repeating this experiment we are able to gather a set of data which responds to statistical analysis, and from there can make certain deductions about how God interacts with people.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that some of those who have made great contributions to the advancement of science have also been devout believers in God.
