Go Green, Buy Hydrogen Cars - By: TomJ

Hydrogen is obtained from fossil fuels but it is not as hazardous as petrol or diesel. It is free from carbon emissions and it is sometimes generated from other renewable sources of energy like water electrocution, natural gas or biomass. Hydrogen cars are getting really famous in the market because of their environment friendly theme. You can visit greenautos.com for the latest on such automobiles.

Vehicles powered by hydrogen are better in efficiency as compared to traditional engines based on combustion. They only use water for emissions. The energy created by 1 KG of hydrogen is equivalent to a gallon of gasoline.

There are two ways for converting hydrogen to mechanical engineering. One is by hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles (HICEV). This is an altered version of gasoline engine for running it on gasoline. The other way, which is more common, is through fuel cells. Fuel cell based hydrogen cars are similar to electric vehicles as they these cars use electricity for powering up the motors. The electrical equipment is located near the wheels of the vehicle.

PEM or (Polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell is the most common type of fuel cell for cars. The PEM has a electrolyte membrane located between negative electrode (anode) and positive electrode (cathode). The oxygen is generated at cathode and hydrogen is produced at anode. The molecules of hydrogen pass from membrane to cathode when you remove the electrons from hydrogen molecules. The electrons then go through external circuit to join the hydrogen ions on side of cathode. Here, the electrons, hydrogen ions and molecules of oxygen are mixed together for producing water. To power up the hydrogen cars, you need electric current and this is created by electrons.

Fuel cell automobiles can be powered either by pure hydrogen gas stored on the hydrogen cars or through secondary fuel which transmits hydrogen like natural gas, ethanol or methanol. For making a good hydrogen car, you two things – dependable hydrogen car and also extensive and efficient hydrogen highway. The latter is a series of hydrogen filling stations put on a route. It is important to make hydrogen highways for promoting hydrogen cars particularly because hydrogen has a very tiny energy amount.

One common feature between hydrogen cars and standard combustion engines is the tank which needs to be refueled quite often. A lot of hydrogen cars are in the market right now are either prototypes or available for just a limited time.

Audi recently launched Audi Hydrogen A2 vehicle, it is a tiny sports car which uses Ballard PEM fuel cell stack. The top speed is 109 mph and it has a range of 137 miles. Chrylser also released a hybrid called the ecoVoyager. It is based on 45 kilowatt fuel cell stack along with 268 horsepower electric motor. On electricity, it can run about 40 miles and gives a 300 miles range before you need to refuel again.

The most recent of hydrogen cars from Ford is the Ford Focus FCV. It is powered by Ballard 902 Fuel Cell PEM stack along with a highest speed of 90 mph. The range is around 150-200 miles.
