Glamour Modeling for Beginners - By: GMalone

To most girls, becoming a model is a childhood fantasy. Dressing up, putting on makeup and having your picture taken, then being adored and fawned over by those looking at the pictures, is like something out of a fairy tale. That's why its hardly a surprise that so many girls begin modeling at such an early age. But as most girls find out, modeling doesn't always end up being the fantasy they think it will be. That's not modeling's fault though. Usually it's a girl's unrealistic expectations that turn most model's into flashes in the pan. In order to have a fun and fulfilling modeling career, it's very important to understand the basics.

First off, don't expect to start making money right away, especially if you only intend on doing fashion modeling. Fashion models require the right look, body type and height to make it. Plus, the ability to walk on a runway the right way is VERY important, and that takes time. Glamour modeling on the other hand (club wear, sexy fashion, lingerie, nude) is much easier for a beginner model to break into and make an immediate splash. Height is not an issue with glamour modeling, but presence in front of the camera is...

Having a magnetic presence in front of the camera is vital to becoming a top glamour model. Just having a pretty face and a hot body doesn't cut it - it helps, but won't put a beginner model over the top. A glamour model must know her body and what looks good. She must know how to pose and play to the camera with facial expressions. It's also important for her to know how to do her own makeup - eyes and lips mainly - as it is very unlikely that her first few photoshoots will have MUA's on hand.

A model can learn a lot from watching others. She needs to take her craft seriously and do a little homework before a shoot. Narrow down the outfits, talk to the photographer or your manager about the lighting that will be used, the props, setting, etc...Try on the outfits, pose in front of the mirror, take self-shots and self-criticize. Have others look at the shots and get their honest feedback. Get ideas from other models and do your homework!

A model must take care of herself and watch what she eats. It's ok to have a few days of indulgement each month, but especially before a photoshoot, it's very important to not allow your weight to fluctuate - remember, the camera easily adds about 5 pounds, and sometimes more. If you're having trouble hitting weight, ask your manager for advice on a 5-day diet and fitness plan.

An aspiring model's first few photoshoots are vital to her career. It's always easy to blame the photographer but usually it's the model who comes unprepared or arrives late or worse yet, doesn't show.

Be professional, prepare, communicate with your manager and the photographer, and most importantly - have fun! There's no point in doing any of this if you don't enjoy yourself. Love preparing for a shoot...love having your picture taken...and LOVE all the attention you get from fans.

Have fun girls!
