Give Your Dog Positive Encouragement When Training - By: Cornell Washington

Here are some tips to get you started.

Dog training is most productive when you know what incentives that your dog will work for. Spend some time to learn what all about your dog - what will work for him, what he likes, and which training techniques will be a waste of time. Also, don't punish your dog if he comes over when you call him by name.

The sooner you start training your dog, the better. This isn't always true, but the younger the animal, the more responsive to training he is. If you train your dog from an early age, he will become an obedient pet and a close friend.

When you get your puppy, be sure to create a bond to him by helping him learn his name. Use his name frequently, and train him to come to you when called. These are the preliminary words that your dog need to know. Spend a lot of time with your new puppy, so he will learn how to gain trust in you. When you set this trust early on, the puppy will be more open to the next steps in training.

If your dog has separation anxiety when you leave your home, try some training. Dogs that won't stop barking and destroy everything in the house when you leave are probably suffering from separation anxiety. You can remedy this situation by teaching your dog not to bark or chew while you are gone. While you're training your dog, it's important to also show a great amount of love so your dog knows that everything is alright.

When housebreaking your puppy, accidents will happen. When accident do happen, clean them up rapidly and thoroughly. If your carpet retains a smell, your god will be attracted to this same spot. Your local animal store may have numerous products to help eliminate this.

Encourage your dog to be as active as possible. Dogs require mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Dogs that lose interest are hard to train. When your dog gets regular exercise, he will be much happier and will pay attention more easily. Make long walks or daily runs a part of your routine that you and your dog can look forward to.

Get your dog prepared for early vet exams. Press your hands firmly over his body in the same manner that the vet will and offer him encouraging praise. Practice handling both paw and teeth exams, by examining between the paw pads and lifting the dog's jowls. See if you can get friends or family members to help you.

During your training program, keep your dog interested by using many different types of treats. Make the training treats extra special so they won't confuse them with normal treats. Making the treats special and unusual will help your dog obey your commands faster. They understand they are getting something special and will work harder for it.

There are many different approaches that can be used to crate train a new puppy. To get a hesitant dog enthusiastic about getting in a crate, put a tempting treat like a fresh chew toy inside and close it up while your dog is outside. Your dog will get excited at the prospect of the treat and soon be eager to enter the crate.
