Getting reliable Cisco Network Support from a Managed Service Provider - By: Peter Wills

A managed service provider (MSP) is usually an information technology (IT) services provider, who manages, and provides a defined set of IT services to its clients. These IT services are provided proactively or as the managed service provider decides, taking into consideration what will be good for the client company. Basically, an MSP acts as a remote IT management wing of your company.

One of the many services such IT support providers offer is Cisco network support. This is a very important IT service. Any business which hopes to become successful in today’s technologically driven age needs to have full access to the web. As Cisco systems are widely used to fulfill the networking needs of many offices, if you are thinking of engaging an MSP, you need to ensure that you get the services of professionals who are experienced in offering Cisco network support.

So how do you decide which managed service provider will be able to offer you good Cisco support? Obviously, you can’t just go by what they say and claim; you have to check their credentials thoroughly yourself. So how do you go about it? Here are a few tips to help you:

1. Check the staff profiles: If an MSP says that it offers Cisco network support, then it should have more than a few networking professionals who are well versed in Cisco systems, and who have Cisco certifications. Also check the certifications that their staff has. As people in the IT industry would tell you, there are five levels of certification offered by Cisco - Entry, Associate, Professional, Expert, and Architect, with increasing levels of sophisticated knowledge. So it is not enough for an MSP to have lots of Entry level Cisco professionals; it should also have a few Professionals and Experts at the very least.

2. Check their experience: While it is not okay to just reject an MSP because of its relative inexperience, especially if it has all the requisite qualifications for offering reliable Cisco support, they are not suitable for all. For example, if you are somewhat impatient, or if your business is in a sector that operates on very tight deadlines, then you might become frustrated with the mistakes they make as part of their learning curve. It would not be fair to a new MSP itself to engage it if you are aware that you might not be willing to give it the patience it needs. It is best to go with an experienced company in such case.

3. Check the client portfolio: If you have decided to go with an experienced managed services provider, then you need to check its client portfolio. It need not have any MNC’s on its list, but it should have handled the network support for some companies which are comparable to yours in market size and complexity of business operations. Get references from these clients if possible.
