Getting an overweight cat back on track - By: Tom Jui

Putting your overweight senior cat on a strict pet diet will not do your cat any good, as it is not considered safe; starving him will upset his balance of essential ingredients. One way to keep him in good health is a pet diet, feeding him quality balanced food that has the correct food ingredients including his essential minerals and vitamins.

A change of food should be done slowly, over a matter of days, giving your cat quality cat nutrition at this important time of his life. The amount of treats given to your cat should be reduced to may be one a day; portion size can be reduced slowly once he is enjoying his new pet diet.

You could divide up the correct portion of food that is required on a pet diet, feeding him three or four times a day to stop him from feeling hungry. Hunger may lead your cat to stealing food from your dustbins. A food diary can be valuable tool until you have a new established feeding routine

It is safe to keep your pet on a light diet with low fat quality ingredients and vitamins as long as you keep him on his correct proportions when he is back to an ideal weight. It is important to remember that a cat that is not lively or energetic will need less food than an active cat.

Whether your pet is a kitten, an adult cat or a senior, they all need to have a form of exercise, particularly with a young cat; leaping and jumping about will keep him in good condition and use up some his energy. An older cat can be encouraged to move around with daily cat play, this will burn off some of his calories or if preferred invest in a cat climbing frame.
