Getting ahead on Ostomy supplies - By: Stuart Barron

Ostomates need ostomy bags and pouches. Other than that, there are additional ostomy supplies they equally need for self care like the following:

Convex inserts
There are convex shaped plastic discs that are inserted inside the flange of specific two-piece ostomy appliances. If what you prefer is a one-piece bag, then you wouldn’t have to buy such ostomy supplies because one-piece pouches are already directly connected to the flange.

Ostomy belts
There are several reasons why ostomates buy specially designed belts. One is that these ostomy supplies are required in some pouches so that they hang on the abdomen. The other reason is that they serve as a support to the pouch or as an alternative adhesive in case the one used produces skin irritations which could likely happen. Belts are also one of the essential ostomy supplies because they can help to maintain an adequate seal especially when you are using a convex skin barrier.

Pouch covers
These are usually made of cotton or cotton blend backing to prevent the skin from irritations. They perfectly fit the pouch and protect and comfort the skin. They are most useful when during intimate occasions to cover the pouch. There are already pouches you can buy that have built-in covers on one or both sides.

Liquid wipes or powder wipes
These are another of those ostomy supplies you need to have because they help protect the skin under the wafer and around the stoma from irritation caused by digestive products or adhesives. Other than that, they make the wafer more adhesive.

Skin barrier paste
This is a special paste that can be used to fill in folds, crevices or other shape or surface irregularities of the abdominal wall behind the wafer, thereby creating a better seal. Paste is used as a "caulking" material and not an adhesive.

Tapes
All wafers or flanges need tapes. They are important to keep the flanges in place and they act as a waterproofing support as well. Fortunately, because the skin can react against adhesives, there are already different kinds of tapes made of different materials to match the sensitivity of your skin.

Adhesive remover
This cleans the adhesive that gets stuck on the skin after removing the wafer tape or from other adhesives. For more information visit to our site at https://www.edgepark.com
