Getting Your Hopes up for Hair Transplants - By: Tim Vincent

Hair transplants are the most popular kind of male cosmetic . It is the only way to completely improve the growth of hair in areas of the scalp that are thinning or bald. It is therefore no wonder that men are queuing up to get their transplant treatment. It is however, important to know that achieving a perfect result may not be totally possible.

Techniques and technology in this area have been quickly getting better over the past fifty years. Only recently are the treatments managing to get the over all appearance of the transplants just like natural hair. This relies on the skills of the surgeon as well as the technology utilised. Modern micro graft methods can produce a result that seems very natural indeed. In fact it can be virtually impossible to identify that a man has had a transplant at all, if the hair professional does a good job. The end result can totally alter the look of the person involved and added to this are the psychological improvements which can come with the greater confidence of looking great.

People going in for this type of hair treatment accordingly have very high expectations for the end result of hair transplantation. The problem here is that there are limitations to the precise treatment. For a start, men only have a certain number of hair follicles that can be used. They have to be the ones that occur in the back and sides of the scalp. Just look at men with a lot of baldness. They always have a horse shoe shaped region of hair at the back and sides. It is just the hair follicles in these areas that are genetically determined to last a life time. Ultimately this means that that this is the amount of hair that can be successfully transplanted. It is fair to see that there will never be enough to give the thick bushy hair that the person once had as a youngster. In fact the best you could achieve is either thick hair in a small number of areas or a general thickening of thinning hair over the head.

Hair transplants are not suitable for everyone. They are rarely done on teenagers even though some may already be showing a fair amount of hair loss. The reason for this is that in the early stages it is not possible to recognise the actual pattern of hair loss and the extent to which it will happen. This makes it very difficult for a specialist to decide treatments. Even when the pattern is apparent there can still be problems. For example a person with thinning hair may have hair transplants toget it thicker. This will look fine for a while but as more of the natural hair is lost through time the thinness will eventually appear again. This means that more transplants will be needed to retain the original thickness. The patient should be aware of this and plan for it.

As can be seen people going in for hair transplant surgery can have expectations that are not achievable. This means that in the end they will be unhappy with the results of their surgery. It is important to understand that there are only a certain number of hair follicles that can be transplanted and that they can only be spread across the scalp in a limited number of ways. If you keep this in mind then it is probable that you will be not disappointed with the transplant you get in the end.
