Getting Creative With Your Postcards - By: charen smith

Newsletters as an effective means to get your word out isn’t a particularly new idea. Companies have been sending out newsletters for years because of the benefits they provide. Aside from being a branding vehicle, a newsletter allows you to keep your customers in touch with the latest news, product releases, updates and more.

Unlike flyers or posters which need to get to the point quickly while saying only a limited amount of information, newsletters provide companies the liberty to go more in-depth on certain topics. This in turn helps form a stronger relationship between the company and the consumer. Brands more familiar to people are more likely to be remembered and preferred than those that are unheard of.

We now go to the question of how do you effectively design or plan the contents of your newsletter? Aside from news and articles, you also have to optimize your overall layout for cheaper newsletter printing costs and at the same time more flexibility in the elements you want to include.

A lot of companies aren’t aware that a postcard can actually act as a newsletter as well. Too many people think that a newsletter has to be standard sized paper and six or more pages long to work. The fact is you can fit a healthy bit of information onto a postcard if you know how to economize on your real estate.

What you can do is you can take the designs of your newsletter and then simplify it enough such that it can fit into your postcard. You'll find that you can easily fit two to three short articles on the front and back of your postcard along with some additional information such as your logo, toll-free number and website along with it.

It's true that a two-sided postcard isn’t going to be nearly as long as a six-paged newsletter but the flexibility is where the strength of postcard printing comes in.

Most newsletters are issued every quarter, six months to a year not only because of the cost but also since it takes more effort to fill up a multi-page newsletter with articles and other content compared to other single-page marketing tools. The great thing about postcard newsletters is that you can send them every month if you wanted to. It's cheaper and provides ample space for quick notes, tips or reminders. Over the course of a year you can provide people with just as much information as an annual newsletter would. But by sending smaller chunks through postcard newsletters to them every month, you’re also keeping your brand name fresh in their minds.

The cheaper cost of postcard printing is another good reason to switch. Not only are you able to give them information more often but also you’re saving money as you’re doing so.

Just because the standard newsletter is effective in itself doesn't mean you should switch into more unique methods of information marketing. Sometimes people don’t want to take the time to sit down and read a full-sized newsletter. Switching to postcard newsletters not only enables you to keep your consumers informed more frequently but it also helps you cut down costs while still being a cut above the rest.
