Women breasts change throughout the life so it is essential for women to be aware of the changes and learning how breasts feel at different times will help them understand how their breasts normally look and feel. Women those who are familiar with their breasts are more likely to notice abnormalities that could be the warning signs of breast cancer.

What Does Breast Awareness Mean?

Breast awareness is getting to know the breasts so that it is clear that what is normal and how breasts look and feel normally. Women should see the doctor in case of noticing any unusual changes and women age 50-69 should get their breasts screen every two years so that abnormalities can be detected at initial stage.
How to Know the Breasts?

As it is important for women to know how breasts look and feel normally so self exam is the best way for it. Look in the mirror and do visual inspection of breasts time to time so that any change in appearance can be due cancer. Only visual inspection is not enough to know the breasts so feel them as well through manual inspection and it can be done while taking shower or lying o bed. It is not difficult and just takes a few minutes to be completed so don’t hesitate to do it and make it a part of routine so that constant contact with breast can be maintained.

It is important to remember during manual inspection that all breast tissues are examined thoroughly including collarbone to bra line and armpit. Finger pads need to be used for feeling breast tissues near the surface and deeper tissues as well.
There is no standard way to do self exam, however there are some suggestions to do this exam effectively but women can do it anyway they find convenient. It should be performed by those who are still having periods at the time when there is no swelling, lumpiness and pain as normal changes of the breasts so that they don’t cause any misunderstanding.

Women of all ages are required to know their breasts, but older women should become familiar with their breasts due to the increased risk in this age. Age is one of the unavoidable factors to increase the risk of breast cancer so the only way is to take care of breast so the risk to be affected by this cancer can be reduced.
