German Romanticist Art - By: tomgurney

There have only been a few contributors to the Romanticist art movement to have come from Germany but one of those made a great impact, and his name was Caspar David Friedrich. This article looks into the career of Friedrich and also considers other famous Romanticist artists from France and the UK.

Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog was one painting which really set Friedrich out as a key figure with in German art at that time and his work helped to build interest in this art movement in his own country, when previously Romanticism had proven more popular in France and the UK. Friedrich was well remembered for his elaborate landscape paintings which normally would have a single element or area with which to focus, often an individual person in the foreground of the work.

Besides Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, there were also many other significant paintings from this artist such as Flat country shank at Greifswalder Bodden, Fog in the Elbe Valley, Forest in the late autumn, Georg Friedrich Kersting and Giant Grave by the Sea. The real truth is that this artist really was highly productive across his career and created hundreds of paintings worthy of note, and certainly too many to mention them all here in this article which only aims to summarise his career.

Notable artists besides Friedrich who were prominent in the Romanticist art movement included Frenchman Eugene Delacroix plus also British painter JMW Turner. Delacroix created the highly emotive Liberty Leading the People which remains possibly the most significant painting with in this whole art movement whilst Turner contributed some impressive seascapes of famous battle scenes with in Europe as well as some watercolours from his time travelling around Italy. There are plenty more artists worth checking out with in this group as well as all the impressionists who followed on the innovations found here and added in their own ideas to push things ever onwards.

There cannot be any doubt that Friedrich remains amongst the most respected of all Romanticist artists and that he was a very rare German point of reference with in this particular art movement, though his impact was certainly considerable. It is not surprising to find that Friedrich paintings are currently proving so popular as fine art reproductions with many of his international fanbase choosing copies of his originals for their own homes as either handmade oil paintings, art prints or posters.
