General Motors has helped donate more than 10 million dollars to the national MLK Jr. memorial, and has now announced that it’s going to contribute another $100,000. General Motors’ North America President Mark Reuss will make the official announcement to the Washington D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Project Foundation during the MLK Legacy Reception taking place this weekend. During the reception, the Martin Luther King Jr. monument will finally be unveiled after being in production for more than 20 years.

The reception this weekend is scheduled to honor the 48th anniversary of MLK Jr.’s “I have a Dream Speech.” The reception was originally meant to be held in August but was rescheduled due to inconvenient weather. The reception will be held after a weekend of of activities meant to honor Dr. King. One of those activities is the Dream Gala, at which Reuss will accept an award for the GM foundation.

The GM chairman and CEO, Dan Akerson, will even be honored among the dignitaries alongside President Obama and some of Dr. King’s descendents. Harry Johnson, president and CEO of the Washington D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation had this to say: “We’re deeply grateful to the General Motors Foundation and Chevrolet for being with us from the start and supporting the Foundation to build a lasting memorial to Dr. King, his principles, and his ideals in our nation’s capital. The additional support and their encouragement of others to join them is very important to our efforts.”

This memorial is meant to convey the recurring themes of Dr. King’s ideals which were democracy, justice, hope, and love. The memorial will be placed on the Tidal Basin, very close to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial. There will also be a 450 foot inscription wall placed with the monument that will be engraved with over a dozen of Dr. King’s most famous quotations.

If you would like to help support General Motors’ philanthropic goals, you can help by making individual donation to the MLK Jr. Foundation.
