Gemstone History, Beliefs, and Lore - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Gemstones are popular gifts to your loved ones. Giving gemstones shows your love and fondness to the receiver of the gift. It would be nice to give the birthstone or the wedding anniversary gemstone to your family, friend, or partner, depending on the occasion. You can give diamond, ruby, topaz, pearl, emerald, garnet, aquamarine, amethyst, and other kinds of gemstones. If you want to know more about gemstones, it is important to look into the gemstone history first.

Each gemstone has its own beauty. There are white, green, blue, red, purple, yellow, and orange gemstones in different shades and textures. And each gemstone has its own history. However, gemstone history still depends on the location and culture. For example, the history of gemstones in Egypt is different from the history of gemstones in Babylon. This is because gemstones are closely tied to the culture of their origin and to the people who wear them.

The history of gemstones has been passed down from generation to generation through ancient writings and archeological findings. They are also usually discovered in sites where ancient people were buried. This is because some people believed that precious stones have powers that can protect the dead person in the afterlife. You can trace the earliest evidence of gemstones as far back as 25,000 B.C. At first, gemstones were used in their natural shapes. But as time goes by and people start to develop modern and sophisticated tools, gemstone carving became popular. You can find different shapes and sizes of gemstones used to adorn jewelries such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, to name a few.

In the ancient times, royal people such as kings use gemstones to decorate their crowns, swords, shields, and jewelries. Gemstones symbolize power and wealth. The reason behind this is simple. Some gemstones are difficult to find and are expensive. Only powerful and wealthy people can obtain them not just in the ancient times but also in these modern times.

Although it is true that gemstones are used as adornment, some people, especially in the ancient times, believe that these gemstones have healing powers. These gemstones were believed to heal certain diseases and protect their wearers against harm. Some people even thought that these precious stones have life, get old, and die, just like people. They were even believed to be a part of the wearer's body and soul.

As what has been mentioned earlier, history and beliefs about gemstones vary from culture to culture. However, many gemstone historians believe that the earliest people who wore precious stones are medicine men. This means that the earliest wearers of gemstones believed in the healing powers of these stones. They were worn by people as protection or remedies. Gemstones steeped in wine or grinded into powder were also believed to be effective remedies against diseases.

To know more about popular gemstone history, you should research about them in books or websites that talk about gemstones. You should know more about gemstones before you buy them for yourself or give them as gifts.
