Game Changer: YouTube On Demand Movies - By: ArticleSubmit Auto

Who doesn't love seeing a good movie? The feeling of sitting in the dark theatre as the screen expands after the trailers. It's no wonder that even with the advent of the internet, big screen plasmas with surround sound and DVDs that can bring you the crisp quality of film that the theatre and movie industry is thriving, after all, when was the last time you heard a chain of filmtheatersclosing?

The Times, they are a Changin'

That's not to say there hasn't been any friction or shake up in the industry. Let's look at the 'film industry' through the eyes of a budding Director. If you have a passion for films and the know how of how to execute a vision breaking into the industry is no easy feat. Up until very recently the two most common revenue models were either getting a film into the cinema or television. Good luck getting that gig! The reality is that most budding directors worked on their films part time while holding a regular job and barely if ever saw any real return on their time investment.

This is what my living room looks like... not.

And it's not that Australian Directors are bad. Saying that there is talent in Australia is an understatement, and a lack of a revenue stream only makes budding directors more hungry and creative, having to work on small budgets. Nor is it that Australians don't want to watch Australian films. The problem is in fact, the problem that has plagued the music industry of late and that is a viable revenue model of distribution.

Simply put there is no way for Australians that want to watch good Australian films to put money into Australian director's hands. There's a gap if you will. Sure, I'm sure there's some old dingy theatre somewhere in the city where you can pay $5 to watch an arthouse Australian film but that's old school man! The theatres would most likely be filled with industry professionals trying to support their art and not the regular layman, and even if the regular Australian did visit a theatre from time to time what about international audiences or Australians overseas?

There has been a couple of services doing this but it's about time for the professionals to show everyone how it's done.

YouTube takes a step, everyone listens

Big shifts sometimes don't happen with a bang. There's no fireworks, there's no huge media coverage. So you may think I'mexaggerating or just trying to be dramatic. Well maybe I am. Maybe this won't be as big of a deal to you as it will be to the budding Australian director.

To cut a long story short YouTube is, in the very near future (may be in the next 10 minutes), launching on demand movies. The> all though to be fair the death of physical DVD rentals is pretty much inevitable; Blockbuster had gone bankrupt last year.

Game Over... in 5 years maximum.

Sony, Warner Brothers and Universal have all ready signed up with YouTube. Let me tell you why this is a good thing: no more long trips to the video store, only to find out that release you wanted is either out or not available and no more overdue late fees. My best bet is that it will also be cheaper for the consumer, with US rentals currently at $2 on YouTube which is very fair, and our strong dollar doesn't hurt. Also, since the cost of distribution and housing is minimal, and YouTube servers seem to be unlimited, smaller directors and movie studios will be in the game again.

When one door shuts, another one opens (opportunity)

If an independent director can get just 30,000 people to watch his movie online that's $60,000 in revenue (minus YouTube's takings). The best part is that if someone in Sweden were to want to watch the movie, they are not restricted because their local Blockbuster doesn't stock it, so it's more money into the director's hands.

This is another development which may, or may not be the best for major studios but isdefinitelya great step towards levelling the playing field for the independent directors in Australia and around the world!
