The laptop is now ingrained upon society in a way that is difficult to comprehend; seemingly every home has one as a far more convenient way to access the internet, compile documents and of course play games. But as the laptop increasingly works its way into everyday life what does the future hold for this most versatile and practical of devices? The following article hopes to highlight some of the features that are likely to be present in new laptops.

Ultimately the next generation of laptop that will be deemed as truly revolutionary will have to incorporate once specific aspiration; that is to be far more environmentally friendly and have considerably more power saving functionality.

After all that is the major problem with contemporary laptops, they simply run out of power too quickly, three hours is not a considerable amount of time when longer journeys are considered, hence a battery that lasts longer is almost certainly needed. Naturally technicians have looked into extending the battery life of existing batteries but there are also more revolutionary designers who see the recycling of energy as the way to improve lifespan.

One of the technologies being proposed is a laptop that will be able to convert heat into power. All laptops produce a great deal of heat when running so it makes sense to utilise this heat and convert it into electricity. The technology behind the gadgetry is somewhat complex, suffice to say that a thermoacoustic engine is utilised to convert thermal energy into electrical power.

The theory is that the thermoacoustic engine, that converts heat into remarkably loud noise, can then be used to convert the sound into electricity. If all of this can be contained within a laptop the lifespan of such a device will be enhanced; at the moment however this remains an experiment and is far from ready to be incorporated into laptop design.

A more realistic way for laptops to conserve power is to change the way they operate, this is particularly true for the screen. An LCD screen uses a great deal of power to run, this is why when laptops are run from the battery they will last far longer with a dimmer screen.

A more effective way for designers to conserve power without sacrificing brightness however it is to utilise the new OLED technology; organic light emitting diodes are rapidly becoming the hottest development in computer and television design for the unbelievable sharpness, brightness and impressively low power consumption.

Power sources seem to also be changing; lately many scientists have suggested that it will be possible in the future to run laptops from fuels rather than electrical batteries. These fuels are either methyl alcohol or natural gas and will use on board chemical reactions to power the device.

This works much like the internal combustion engine but on a far smaller scale, with fuel running some form of electricity producing motor. Once again however this sort of technology is only in the developmental stages and will not be a part of laptop manufacture for some time.

The future of the laptop is bright, as it is such an important device to society there is a great deal of work being undertaken to find improvements. Understandably powering these devices is an important aspect, but developers are also studying how interfaces can be changed with touchscreen and how mobile computing power can be enhanced. One thing is certain, the laptop of the future will be faster, stronger, easier to use and will have a greater lifespan.
