Further Awareness is needed in the UK on mobile phone recycling - By: Felicity Lightbody

It's becoming more and more common to replace mobile phones on a regular basis. But what happens to the newly retired mobile phone? Does it join a host of similar discarded cellular devices in a rubbish drawer? Does the newly retired mobile phone just get tossed in the trash bin? All too often this is exactly what happens to old mobile handsets. Further awareness is needed in the UK on mobile phone recycling, and education regarding exactly how easy it is to recycle these devices. By doing so, the consumer helps the environment and can even help their fellow countrymen.

Why is it so important to recycle mobile phones? Unfortunately, mobile phones contain a variety of components manufactured from raw materials that require a massive amount of energy to harvest, process, and manufacture. By simply discarding an unused mobile phone all the energy that went into the process of making that device is lost. By recycling or re-purposing the mobile phone, it lives on and the energy consumption created by the manufacture of the device is not wasted. There are also parts of the mobile phone, such as the battery, which can be harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. This is a double hit to the environment because not only is it a waste of resources, but also a direct danger to the ecosystem.

Even as recent as a few years ago, an environmentally conscious consumer could experience difficulty finding a place to accept a mobile phone for recycling. This frustrating experience soured many of these well meaning consumers on the process of mobile phone recycling. Today things are radically different. Mobile phone recycling has become the 'in thing' and there are now many phone recycling companies, such as Envirofone and Mazuma Mobile who will give you cash for your old handset, even if it is no longer fully functioning.

What happens to a recycled mobile phone? Many mobile phone recyclers are charities that refurbish and redistribute the mobile phones to people in need. Charities for women and children, low income families, who are unable to afford a means of communication and mobile phones for volunteer organisations. This allows for the mobile phone to experience new life and for a good cause. Other mobile phone recyclers break down broken or defective mobile phone devices to reuse the raw materials, requiring less new raw materials to be harvested and processed.

By taking just a small amount of time to ensure that an unwanted mobile device is recycled properly, you can help to earn yourself some money and help prevent harm to the environment. If you think about the bigger picture, your old phone could also provide a crucial line of communication to a needy person or family and reduce the need for more harvesting of limited raw materials used in the production of the device. Everyone taking simple small steps like this one can help to reduce the strain on the planet's resources while requiring almost no effort on the part of the consumer.
