Fun Ways to Get Around Mackinac Island - By: Marcia Dunnigan

Since motorized vehicles are banned on Mackinac Island, other methods of transportation must be used to explore the Island. Let's look at the different ways before you make your choice. Perhaps you may choose one of more modes--they are all great fun!

Renting a bike or riding your own is a great way to travel throughout the Island. If you are going inland, you will need a map showing the roads and all the various biking trails. You will not be able to get lost taking the shoreline route which is actually a State Highway, namely M-185. This is the only state road in all of Michigan where motorized vehicles are prohibited. The Ferry Lines charge $8 to bring your own bike to the Island. If you prefer, rent the bike of your choice at one of the numerous bike rental shops along Main Street.

Horse-drawn carriages are another method of transportation on the Island. You may choose a scheduled tour, rent your own horse and buggy, or hire a taxi. These tours, either regular group or private, give you the ability to visit many of the local attractions easily. Tours have been an important business on the Island since 1869.

Do you want more privacy and a bit of adventure? If so, rent your own horse-drawn carriage and drive it yourself. Taxis are a good way to get from point A to point B when you don't want to walk or ride a bike; however, they need to be reserved ahead of time.

Of course, private tours or renting your own carriage may be more costly, but worth it if within your budget. No matter what your choice for Island transportation, you will make wonderful memories to take home!

Horseback riding is also a fun way to see the Island. You can rent a horse at one of the stables. The horse will be chosen for you according to your riding ability. A guide will be provided if you need one, or if you are a seasoned pro, you may ride alone to tour the Island.

Walking or hiking around the Island is all part of the total Island experience--it all depends upon your time and your stamina as to this choice. The Downtown, Fort Mackinac and the Grand Hotel are all easy walking routes. Hiking is extremely pleasant especially throughout the interior of the Island.

Snowmobiles are used for transportation between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island when ferries are not running. They are also allowed on the Island for visitors and Islanders during the frigid snowy winters. Cross-country skis, snowshoes, and horse-drawn sleds are other winter transportation options.

Now as far as getting to and from the Island, other than winter months, there is only water or air. Ferries run to and from Mackinac Island at regular intervals from May through December. The Island hosts one air strip for private or chartered planes and accommodations are available in the marina for privately-owned boats and yachts.

As you can see, these are fun ways to travel about Mackinac Island. So don't be afraid to visit, dreading the fact that you won't have your car. Riding in the horse-drawn carriages sends you back to a different time and walking and biking gives you plenty of exercise as you are sightseeing.
