From Football Pitch Maintenance to Tennis Court Construction – For Better Sports Facilities - By: Kestrel Contractors Ltd.

The best sports facilities are designed with the end user in mind: and the facility owner too. Think before you start and you’ll develop a facility that works from both ends, with regular football pitch maintenance built in to its design and a multipurpose tennis court construction that allows extra revenue streams to open up in off season times.

Tennis court construction can be a real money spinner for a forward thinking sports facility. Constructed from a variety of artificial surfaces, a multi use gaming area (MGA) supports not just tennis but up to six other sports as well – basketball, five a side football, hockey, netball, badminton and volleyball. The surface is simply marked with all the relevant pitch markings, each one colour coded so the players don’t get confused.

This model of tennis court construction ensures that the pitch is playable year round – and also that the pitch can be used to accommodate whatever sport the end user wishes to use it for, with very little preparation. All you need to do is get the right scoring equipment (goals, nets and so on) in place before the hire time is due.

What about football pitch maintenance? A cleverly thought out maintenance schedule will ensure that team pitches are always ready for the football season – and that the drainage for those pitches is sufficient to keep the surface playable whenever it is required.

Water is one of the biggest damagers of a football playing surface. In liquid form, if the pitch is not properly drained, water can quickly form puddles on a muddy slop and render the pitch not only unplayable, but requiring a huge amount of repair before it can be used again. Frozen water (ice, in other words) can part the soil molecules and lead to pitch breakup, which then turns to bog when the ice thaws.

Good drainage is an essential part of football pitch maintenance. The pitch should have a proper drainage system installed – with under pitch irrigation and piping, pitch cuts and sand all helping to keep the surface as smooth and playable as possible. Annual taking up of the turf and maintaining the drainage system ensures a long life and a good quality surface.

A poorly maintained pitch can quickly affect revenue streams at a public sports facility. The more often the pitch is not playable, the more likely it is that regular users will seek out a different centre – one with flexible and good quality pitches for their sport.

This brings us back to tennis court construction. In a small space the successful sports facility learns to maximise its potential by having limited numbers of pitches – but where everyone is suitable for as many sports as possible. Plan ahead and make the most of what you have.
