Frequent Exclusions From Pet Medical Insurance Policies - By: Nicholas Hunt

A great pet insurance policy can be a true life-saver if your pet needs vetinary treatment that you couldn't otherwise afford to pay for. Whether it's because of an injury or disease, the huge veterinary bills could easily force you to have your pet put down if it wasn't for the financial support that insurance supplies.

However, as with all issues fiscal, things aren't always so clear cut. Pet health insurance providers can vary considerably in what precisely they'll approve a claim for, and so it makes sense to read the small print before purchasing a policy to make sure that everything you need to be covered is so. It's a good idea to find out what's specifically omitted from cover as well as what's covered, and some examples of standard exceptions are identified below.

Routine Maintenance: The prices of grooming, dental hygiene, pest control and general examinations are not commonly covered by insurance.

Inoculations: Although it is a good idea to immunize your pet against common illnesses, the cost will commonly have to be borne by you and not the insurance firm.

Minor Fees: Most offerings have an 'excess' figure under which claims can not be made. Lower excess amounts usually mean higher premiums.

Pre-existing Conditions: Costs resulting from conditions which were already known about when the policy was issued will not ordinarily be paid.

Lifetime Treatments: Some providers will only pay out for the first 12 months of a long term intervention such as that for diabetes.

These are only a few of the more popular exceptions present in pet insurance policies, and naturally each insurance policy will have its own details to pore over. However uninteresting it may well be, it's vital to read this before purchasing the policy if you want to be certain your policy won't end up being worthless when you need to claim on it.
