When looking at freelance writing jobs, take into consideration the amount of work involved versus the pay that is offered. Not all jobs are created equal and despite the claims many options are not really for beginners. It is easy to be overwhelmed by all the promises of large amounts of easy money. A good rule of thumb to follow is avoiding spending money until you make money!

3 Basic Requirements:

#1 PayPal: This company manages your money online. You will need to have an account with them if you ever intend to get paid; there is no way around it. Almost everyone on the planet who offers freelance writing jobs will pay you via PayPal. Signing up is free, so don’t worry about it. The process involves filling out some bank-related forms and entering personal information. Again, don’t worry because they are a very reputable company whose entire reputation revolves around discretion.
Please note that transferring funds from a bank account to your PayPal account (or vice versa) takes between 6 to 8 business days to complete. Instantaneous it is not so please plan accordingly. Specific jobs may pay daily but you will not be able to spend that money (except online with vendors that accept PayPal) until it arrives in your regular bank account.

#2 Credit cards: Unfortunately you will need one of these at some point too. If you already possess one then contact the appropriate company and request an additional card with a very low limit ($200-500). Do not use your regular credit card online! If your card number is compromised then the most that can be stolen from you is your card limit. This is an unlikely scenario but it is possible that it could happen, so follow this advice to keep safe.
Another option here is to do as I do; Money Mart offers pay as you go credit cards that can be pre-loaded with money. This is a very safe option but requires an $18 charge to activate it.

#3 Internet access: This may seem like an obvious one, but somebody always asks me if there is a way to do freelance writing online with out Internet access - NO! If you have a monetary concern with high-speed access then down grade to dial-up (gasp). Most of what you will be doing involves primarily text and a dial-up connection is sufficient for online writing jobs.

Where to start? Blog posting is a good place to start. This is a very easy gig that requires little skill. Employers need people to post comments and feedback related to commercial products or services. Potentially you could get offered proof reading or article writing jobs that pay more. The online companies that offer this sort of work are usually membership sites that require a nominal monthly fee. Only consider joining those sites that have an introductory offer so you can avoid paying full price until you know you like it. If you do not make enough in the first week to cover your monthly cost then cancel and move on.
