1. Create a Spending Journal

The first step is to figure out where all that money is going every month. You can do this by keeping a spending journal for a week or two that will keep track of every penny you spend.

Vanilla latte on the way to work? Write it down. Pack of gum? It gets recorded as well. By keeping a spending journal to track where your money is going, you will have a good idea where your money is going and where you can afford to cut back.

2. Categorize your Expenses

The next step in creating is to fit all of your expenses into tidy categories that will be easier to control. Most people find that categories like utilities, house payment, gas, groceries and clothing are easy to work with.

Make up as many categories as you need, because these categories will help you keep a handle on your cash flow.

3. Set Spending Limits for Each Category

This is where your spending journal will come in handy, even if it's to see where you need to cut back your spending most. For example, a clothing budget that is larger than all your other categories put together may need to be tweaked a tad to make it a more reasonable part of your expenditures.

Set limits that are reasonable, but also within your means.

4. Keep up on your Personal Budget

Once your personal budget is established, it is important to keep up on recording expenses and tracking your progress each month. As you catch up, you can also use that time to pay bills and balance your checkbook. Keeping up with the financial tasks will save time and money in the long run.
