Forever My Love (Philippines) - By: Richard A Stooker

I wanted to watch a Filipino movie to improve my Tagalog. Unfortunately, it turned out the DVD did not have an option for English subtitles. However, there's not much dialog, and the action is very self-explanatory, so I doubt I missed more than a few details.

The cover of the DVD is deceptive in another way. It makes the movie appear to feature a love story between the young couple, Oyo Boy Sotto and Nadine Samonte. That is present, but is not the main storyline.

The main story is that of a little girl we first see riding a little bicycle around an area near her house. We soon see a lot of spooky characters around her, threatening her. This includes a nun holding the hand of a little girl in a school uniform giving the little girl a really ugly look.

The girl obviously perceives these ghosts, but studiously ignores them.

Much of the time of this movie consists of watching the girl trying to ignore the ghosts threatening.

There is the subplot of the young couple in love. We see them together in a beautiful area by a river. Later, for reasons I couldn't understand (not enough Tagalog), two thugs shoot the boy and push him into the river. I don't know why they wanted him dead, but I didn't need English subtitles to tell me that he was killed.

Then there's a scene where he attends his own funeral, shades of Tom Sawyer -- only he really is dead. His mother and father and girlfriend really are wearing black, staring down at a coffin and crying.

In the meantime, we've seen the little girl lying on her bed beside her mother, talking to the mother, but then the mother gets up without saying anything, and the rest of the family (father, mother and little brother) drive away, leaving the little girl home alone.

She passes the time putting food on a plate for her and her best doll. But the ghosts seem to surround the house and she's scared out of her mind.

Sometimes she remembers trying to teach her younger brother how to whistle, and daydreams about a day with her family when her brother was flying a kite.

Finally, she's rescued from the ghosts by the spirit of the dead young man.

Her family finally returns home. Though the car breaks down, it's close to the girl, and it seems all will be well. Until the younger brother runs away from the car, and sits beside the little girl who's still trying to teach him to whistle.

By this time, I should have realized the gimmick or plot twist, but I guess I'm slow . . .

I found the scene where the mother catches up to the boy and berates him when he protests that he sees his older sister oddly effective . . . when the mother finally sees the girl, gets very sad, and tells her that she can't stay.

They both cry, and by then I finally catch on. Yes, the girl is dead - she's a ghost herself. That's why she can see the other ghosts.

After I recovered, I vowed I wouldn't be fooled like that again. However, I'd planned to watch a second supernatural movie that night, in English, and by coincidence -- I swear I couldn't have planned this -- the second movie I'd already planned to watch was . . . drumroll! . . . The Sixth Sense.

And, yes, I was totally fooled until the end. The same trick, two nights in a row.
