What is True Market Value (TMV) pricing and where can I find it on your site?
Answer
Edmunds' True Market Value® (TMV®) pricing system helps you determine the average transaction price, or “what others are paying,” for new or used vehicles in your area so that you can begin your negotiations with a fair price in mind.

How to Find TMV®

New Vehicles:
Visit our New Cars area
Select the Make, Year, and Model you’re interested in (e.g., 2011 Ford Mustang)
Choose the Style you’d like (e.g., GT Coupe)
Click the red “Price with Options” button
Select your desired options and color, and enter your local ZIP Code
Finally, click the red “TMV Pricing Report” button to generate a customized TMV® price for the vehicle

Used Vehicles:
Visit our Used Cars area
Click “Appraise a Car”
Select the Make, Year and Model you’re interested in (e.g., 2007 Ford Edge)
Choose the Style you’d like (e.g., SEL AWD)
Choose whether you are planning to buy or sell the vehicle, then indicate the vehicle's color, mileage, options and condition, and enter your ZIP Code
Finally, click "Get Pricing Report" to generate a customized TMV® price for the vehicle

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide TMV® prices for the following:
Model years prior to 1990
Exotic vehicles
RVs, motor homes, commercial trucks, tractors or trailers
Motorcycles or ATVs
Vehicles with salvage titles
Demo vehicles
Non-U.S. vehicles
Customized vehicles (e.g., Saleen Mustang) or aftermarket accessories and/or parts

What’s Included?

Our TMV® pricing system estimates a vehicle’s average transaction price, not its “out the door” price. Consequently, TMV® prices do NOT include manufacturer-to-consumer rebates (i.e. cash rebates), sales tax, license/registration fees or dealer title/documentation (“doc”) fees, all of which can vary depending on the vehicle, dealership and/or state, and which are typically applied after a transaction price has been determined.

However, TMV® prices do take into account incentives and fees that may affect the transaction price, including manufacturer-to-dealer incentives (i.e. dealer cash), destination charges and advertising fees (when applicable).

Aftermarket Parts and True Market Value (TMV) Price
I have upgraded my vehicle with aftermarket parts, such as a spoiler kit, sound system or engine performance enhancements. How do these items affect its True Market Value (TMV) price?
Answer
We do not provide Used TMV® pricing for vehicles modified with aftermarket parts. That's because such parts can vary widely in original cost and quality, and there is no reliable information as to how much value they add (if any) to the vehicle when it is resold. Additionally, some modifications may void the vehicle's original warranty.

It is likely that any customizations will actually reduce a vehicle's trade-in value because the dealer will choose to return the vehicle to its original stock condition before offering it for sale again. You may find a better market for a modified vehicle by selling it privately, such as through an online classified service or newspaper, or you may be better off simply returning the vehicle to stock condition and then selling it and the aftermarket parts separately.
