Foreign children in Indian Schools - By: Alvin dos

“Shalom” said a little boy with a Jewish cap to a little girl as they both drove their cycles outside the school gates. “Ni hao” said a Chinese girl to an Indian girl who asked her how to say” How are you? in Chinese”. All these students were from the Indian International School. A popular haven for children of expats, diplomats, embassy staff and other foreign dignitaries on assignments and postings in India, International education prepares children for a multicultural future offering them the best of both worlds – the traditional and modern. Education in India is starkly differentiated, with schools that still follow the ‘chalk and talk’- teaching methodology and stuff the children with outdated information, and those which actually give your child the best of advanced technology through smart classes that utilize 3D and 2D computer programs.

An international school signifies a school meant for children not in their host country or children who would like to have an exposure to a diverse international curriculum with practical based learning. Such schools are thus very popular among parents who are constantly on the move. International school are designed with parameters like infrastructure, passionate teaching staff, teacher to children ratio less than 1:25, healthy and pollution free location in line with schools abroad. International schools in India are also becoming very popular with local residents wanting to give their children an exposure for International schooling incase they choose to pursue higher studies abroad.

In the former days, international schools in many countries were established by expatriates who found them selves working in various parts of the world, bringing with them children who needed to receive education that would suit their overall progress. The early international schools were set up with the help of nations having large interests in the host countries. Some of the earliest international schools were founded in the second half of 19th century. Countries like Japan, Switzerland, Turkey and UK were the pioneers in establishing international schools and curriculums.

Most of the top class international schools are accredited to reputed learning institutes either in U.S. or U.K. or Switzerland and follow a curricula such as International General Certificate of Secondary Education or the International Baccalaureate, (IB) Diploma Program and other country specific baccalaureates. The faculties at International Schools are usually certified by standards of their origin country especially designed for international schools. The curriculum generally comprises subjects like Languages, Arts, Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, Physical education, Information Technology, and Design Technology.

All the International schools follow the NCLB rule that states” No Child Left Behind.” The IB Diploma Program is an academically challenging curriculum that prepares students for success at university and applying at foreign degree. International Schools work hard at hiring teachers specifically trained for an International syllabus or for teaching a foreign language. In the process, recruitment is often a tedious process and is usually done at large international job fairs where schools can interview and hire several teachers at one time. International schools serve as cushions to bear the impact of the cultural shock children undergo when they come to a new country and are extremely helpful indeed.
