Wooden items are proving popular presents for parents wishing to buy their youngsters traditional children's toys. There is a huge market for goods aimed at youngsters and such a large choice of items may prove overwhelming to mums, dads and other adults purchasing games for young ones. Studies have shown that children's development can be positively affected by toys, which has led to an influx of devices that increase in complexity from year to year. For example, games designed to improve language and reading comprehension are integrated with speech centres that pronounce words, while lap tops for kids are a growing market.

Despite this, there is still room for toys that may be considered more basic than those that have computer chips embedded in them. For many years, kids took great pleasure in playing with wooden children's toys. Although these kinds of products are not as complex as more modern kinds, they can still benefit the development of youngsters, and have done so for centuries.

Common items for youngsters that tend to be made from wood include jigsaws and puzzles. These encourage little ones to imagine the picture concerned in order to fill in the missing pieces. An abacus is another popular gift made from natural materials, which is useful for helping kids get to grips with basic maths and sums.

Dexterity toys, such as stacking rings are enjoyed by younger children attracted to the bright colours and the task of placing one item on top of another in size order. Similarly, wooden gifts that see kids placing round and squared-shaped objects in the correct holes provide hours of amusement and are a good way of improving hand to eye co-ordination. As well as visually appealing to children, wooden products may assist them in developing a sense of rhythm, as some manufacturers sell musical items, such as castanets and tambourines.

In addition to being educational toys, wooden items also have other advantages. For example, they are generally remarkably durable. They are made from strong material that is designed to undergo much use by youngsters. Usually they do not contain intricate parts, or digital technology found in more modern games that may fail after a few years use.

They are also considered to be safe in that they are not created using plastics that could shatter for example, while those made from sustainable forests may be of greater benefit to the environment than those formed from other substances. The fact that they rarely contain delicate internal instruments and are decorated with special paints mean they are easy to maintain. Dirt and dust can be washed off, which is likely to appeal to adults who care for little ones with allergies.

As wooden children's toys are designed to last, they make great gifts for young ones. Adults who are buying presents for special events may prefer to get youngsters items that they are more likely to keep over the years. These kinds of purchases may become treasured heirlooms that remain in families for generations.
