For SEO success, go deep - By: Tom Jui

'Deep linking' refers to the links you design that lead to pages deep within your website. The term is often referred to in reference to internal links, although sometimes it's used in relation to links all around the net. It represents an important tactic for SEO, but not one of the tactics that is talked about very often. For this reason, many sites overlook deep linking when they SEO.

The first place for deep linking is within your pages. Deep links should be placed within your text content to direct the search engines and your site's users to relevant pages. This is an SEO tactic, so your hyperlinks need to be planned. You can talk to us at SEO Consult Australia about how this affects your SEO.

Using deep links is just as important for inbound links as it is for internal links. Many businesses habitually put their home page as the landing page of their links, so the most common form of link you'll see around the net is http://www.dogspot.com. This is great if the link is coming from a page with users who have a general interest in dogs. If, however, the page giving the link is a blog on dog health, a better inbound link would be to a deep page, such as http://www.dogspot.com/blog/when-spot-had-worms.html. In this instance, deep linking serves not only your pages, but your users as they will be directed to a page that is more relevant to them.

Deep linking isn't just about SEO. It's about common sense. In the fast-paced world of the net, users simply don't have the time to click through five or six links to get to the pages they want. If the Google search box is sitting right above your page in their browser window, it's just as likely that they'll return to searching instead.
