Foot Braces - 3 Things To Look For And How To Know If They Work - By: Aldo Boyd

Often when a person carries a neurological issue, the subject of increased support for the feet comes up. Why can foot braces be a critical part of any rehabilitation process?

Once we stand, there is a complex mixture of bones, muscles and neurological control that combines to develop any given movement. Often people with nerve issues have difficulty basic areas, which can make standing and/or moving from standing trickier. Foot bracing can help with these areas to maximize a person's function.

People use more support with regard to foot everyday, depending on the activities. Think of the sort of footwear you use if you're on the beach, going for fitness, on this ski hill, or hiking up a mountain. Each piece of foot support was established to give you the most support for the best performance. Foot braces are no different.

What if you happen to look for in ankle braces?

1. They need to position the foot in nearly as good of a position as they can. This means a balance relating to the foot turning out and in as well as having a good bend inside ankle. If your foot isn't in the good position, they can't give you the best performance.

2. They should be comfy. If they aren't comfortable, you can move for your best. Would you wear a good shoe for a run in the track?

3. They need to give enough support for the range of activities anybody is doing. If I choose a hike, I want to help wear hiking boots, not sandals. If I only set off hiking once every several years, maybe I don't require a heavy duty pair with hiking boots.

Just how do i know the braces are working?

The fit and function of these braces depend heavily on what the goal is for bracing in the beginning. Are you trying to enhance balance? Prevent foot deformities? Increase walking speed?

Once you can identify the primary goal of the foot brace, then you can figure out how to measure the goal. For instance, if the goal may be to increase balance, you could measure how long you can stand on one foot.

Do you pre and post brace measurements, and there you go!

One final suggestion may be to periodically re-do the measurements of success over time. Then you can identify potential problems early together with address them quickly.

When guess what happens to look for and ways to measure success, foot braces can be an important part of capitalizing on functional motor skills.
