Foods to Avoid For Gout Sufferers - By: JCielo

As a gout sufferer, there are foods to avoid for gout. The foods to avoid are high-purine foods. You'll find a list here of what you can and can't eat with gout. But first, in order to understand why food plays a part in your gout, it's worth going over together what causes your gout.

GOUT CAUSES

Your gout is caused by uric acid crystals that form in the joints, tendons and surrounding tissue. These normally form when there are high levels, or at least higher than normal levels, of uric acid in your blood.

This uric acid is a natural outcome of the breakdown of chemical compounds called purines which exist in our bodies' cells and in our foods.

Now, what normally happens is that this uric acid is processed by your kidneys, with excess uric acid being flushed out of your body through your urine.

But -- there's always a 'but' isn't there? -- sometimes your kidneys don't perform this function well enough, with the result that higher uric acid levels are retained in your bloodstream, leading to uric acid crystals and then gout.

This can happen because there is too much uric acid being produced for your kidneys to handle, or, your kidneys aren't working up to their full potential.

Either way, what you can't be doing as a gout sufferer, is to keep producing even more uric acid into your system. And you saw above how purines, that produce the uric acid, also exist in your foods.

So there is part of the solution right there; your food. But different foods contain different levels of purines, so, as a gout victim, you need to reduce your intake of foods that have high concentrations of purines.

In other words avoid those foods that are high in purines, and, eat foods that are relatively low in purines...

FOODS TO AVOID FOR GOUT

Foods to avoid for gout sufferers are things like; fatty red meats and organ meats, legumes, poultry, fish, shellfish and alcohol (not a food but very important). For example...

Kidneys, liver, heart, mincemeat, meat extracts, mackerel, herring, anchovies, sardines, goose, partridge, turkey, yeast, yeast extracts, etc.

FOODS TO EAT WITH GOUT

You can eat low fat dairy produce, essential fatty acid foods, high vitamin C foods, complex carbohydrates, green leaf vegetables, and, plenty of fruit. Also you must drink 2 to 3 litres of water per day. For example...

Tuna, salmon, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes, red cabbage, red bell peppers, kale, cabbage, parsley, celery, cherries, strawberries, grapes, pineapples, low-fat yoghurt, low-fat milk (not soy), etc.

These lists aren't exhaustive by any means. But they give you an idea of the foods to avoid, and, the foods you can eat as a gout sufferer.

And you diet is important, because a good, well balanced gout diet can help to prevent recurring gout. Which you need to do, because regularly recurring gout can lead to permanent joint damage, and, kidney problems such as kidney stones.
