No matter what type of workplace you have you should carry out health and safety training. Good quality health and safety training will provide staff with guidelines on correct safety processes, how to avoid problems and deal with them when they arise and how to work safely. An important topic that is covered by health and safety training is computer safety.

Computer safety procedures show employees how to use their computer in a way that will reduce the risk of injury or repetitive strain. Below is a taster of some of the health and safety tips that can be gleaned from a course:

Place you computer is a position so that there is no glare seen on the computer screen. The main culprits for glare are lighting and sitting close to windows. This type of glare can make visibility difficult and can reduce your ability to work affectively. If you cannot control the lighting or your position then use a screen filter to protect your eyes.

Check your screen brightness. If it is set too high this will strain your eyes. Also move your seat so that you are between 19 and 27 inches away from the computer screen. Health and safety training also recommends that you have your screen at eye level or below. Place above your normal eyelevel will strain the neck muscles and eyes.

Make sure the computer monitor is cleaned regularly. Dust, smudges and fingerprints will make it hard to see the screen clearly. When using a mouse the health and safety guideline state that you should move it with your whole arm rather than just at the wrist. You should take a break regularly to reduce the effects of eye strain. Choose a chair that supports your lower back and reduce the amount of exposure to wireless networks.
