Follow a routine to ensure good cat nutrition - By: Rick Dahne

When you bring home your kitten for the first time you need to have a routine in place. A kitten’s routine for the day will involve eating, sleeping and playing. Feed him the best quality ingredients, ones that are balanced, and do not contain high amounts of salt, fats and water.

Cat nutrition is quite easy with kittens because cats are carnivores. Just like the cats that live in the wild, they love to hunt for their food and meat is the main ingredient of their staple diet.

Manufacturers are able to help out with cat nutrition by placing details of their ingredients on their packaging. However, some of the cheaper pet products do not meet the high standards required to keep a kitten or adult cat in good health. Meat is the protein that should be at the top of the list and should be the main ingredient in cat food, followed by carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Cat nutrition, with quality pet food, is an essential part of your kitten’s needs as it helps to build up bones and tissues as they grow quickly. Small portions of food should be given to a kitten four times a day, rather than over feed his small stomach with large portions. Feed your kitten at the same time every day to help him adjust to your daily household routine.

Do not be tempted to give your kitten treats from your meals as you will find your kitten stops eating his cat food. If you feed him cat treats then remember to include them in your assessment of how much he his eating. If you have to change his food then change it over two or three days to avoid him having a stomach ache or diarrhoea. At Hills Pets we have a range of balanced pet food for kittens and adult cats.
