Foam rubber solutions for running shoes - By: Rutland

Foam rubber inserts in running shoes play an important part in reducing the risk of what are known as ‘overuse injuries’. The main contributors to these types of injuries are shoes, the kind of running surface being used and the recurring impact loading of the lower part of the athlete’s body. Some of the injuries include Achilles tendonitis, knee damage and stress fractures. It has been established that running shoes are hardly ever the only reason for an injury nor are they a way of completely avoiding injuries. At Technical Foam Services, we are able to work with manufacturers to help develop foam rubber solutions for running shoes to a professional standard.

Shoes that have been properly designed may cut down the possibility of injuries occurring. Basically, they cushion the effects of the constant blows to the feet which transmit through the skeleton. Although it is a commonly held belief that using lighter shoes will help the wearer to save energy, this is not actually the case. The reason for this is that although the consumption of oxygen is reduced according to the amount of shoe weight saved, the athlete also needs to adjust his running style to cope with less cushioning. This adjustment in running technique, it has been found, means that the runner needs to increase his or her uptake of oxygen to cope thus negating the effects of wearing lighter running shoes.

Toward the end of the 1970s running shoes typically had a foam rubber or EVA cushioned midsole. However, there were some running shoes being designed with a four-degree wedge, instead of the cushion, in the midsole. This break from the norm was controversial at the time although it was later recognised as being an early, successful way of controlling the amount of foot movement inside the shoe.
