Foam... technical? - By: Brigette Federico

To the layman, foam manufacturers probably have an easy ride. We would pretty much all appreciate that foam does come in different shapes and sizes and that some have different feels to others, but surely this ground has been pretty well covered? The reality is quite the opposite; Not only are there hundreds of different types of foam available, either for use in their own right or as component parts of another product, but, there are so many technical uses for which foam is utilised that foam manufacturers still spend money on foam development.

At Technical Foam Services Ltd we are one such company that has the development capacity to create new foam products to meet very specific end user requirements. Not only do we have the capacity to modify existing foams or even develop new products, we also have an array of foam processing facilities to hand so that foams can be formed into bespoke shapes. Not only are physical properties of foam important but fitting those properties to an end product that delivers a necessary function is equally important.

Technical foams are utilised for many different functions. Some of the more common functions are things such as sound manipulation, fire retardancy and not forgetting the extremely common need for cushioning. Sound manipulation occurs in many ways, a common requirement is to simply use foam for sound proofing properties but the more technical use of foam in sound manipulation is to dampen certain frequencies of sound or to eliminate resonance or undesirable sound characteristics in an auditorium.

Fire retardancy is an area where foam development has evolved extensively in recent times. All foams in modern furniture must meet safety requirements whilst foams used in aircraft seats have been at the cutting edge of this evolution.
Foam for cushioning? There’s a good chance you’re sat on some right now.
