Florida Keys Fishing - By: Leonardo Guzman

We had gone snorkeling your day before in John Pennekamp State Park and the water was crystal clear from the lack of rain in South Florida.

The clarity in the water enticed me give fishing for tarpon before heading as a result of Key West. The boat captain picked me up in the dock of the waterfront lodge we were residing at around 7: 30 every day in a 17' Maverick, powered by a 90HP Yamaha.

Once we arrived at our fishing destination our intention has been to fish live crabs and sight cast to tarpon nevertheless it was a still early for any tarpon bite so people moved at little within shore for bonefish.

The Maverick I was fishing from possessed a forward casting platform and since there would be only a slight chop to the water, I thought I'd check it out for. Now, most people wouldn't be so concerned about standing on a platform two feet off the deck of a boat that measured only a 18" x 18" but also for a middle aged guy carrying several extra pounds, it was a bit of a challenge. After only a matter of minutes on the platform I felt confident and also the extra height gave me a much better view of the species of fish.

When people moved out to deeper water to chase that tarpon we encountered activity at once. The first tarpon As i cast to was an individual fish, the cast was ok and not perfect and the tarpon improved. The next fish I spotted moved through the flats so fast My partner and i don't even think he or she saw my bait, so what can you do?

Shortly after that, a pod associated with 10-15 tarpon came fishing right at us. My first cast was slightly short, as the fish moved in the boat, I reeled up and got ready to take another cast. The guide yelled "Pick out on fish and cast to it" but they had so many and my own heart was pumping so fast i ending up casting into the middle of the pod just to watch them swim around it.

Shortly next an inconsiderate boater moved standing on us and it was time to relocate so, just a short boat ride later and we had moved even to another flat.

The next flat looked just as promising as being the first because we saw fish at once. Then my shot appeared, I cast the live crab to your fish about 50-75 feet ahead. The tarpon saw the bait and inhaled it. As the guide advised, I waited for the line to obtain tight and raised your rod tip. The fish jumped seven times inside shallow flat before which makes to deeper water for any remainder of the battle which lasted about twenty minutes.

The guide estimated that the fish weighed around 45 pounds. Tarpon always look bigger inside water and I would have thought it was nearer to 60 pounds, but your dog was the expert.

I've seen a few tarpon progressively and hooked many more, including a spring ocean fish that can have gone over one humdred and fifty pounds while trolling live bait for kingfish, but this was my first in the crystal clear waters of Key Largo and one I'll remember for a long time.
