Fixing “FAT32 is not supported” Error While Converting File System from FAT16 to FAT32 - By: kmadhav

FAT (File Allocation Table) is a series of file systems, developed by Microsoft Corporation for its Windows operating system. It has several variants such as FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32. FAT32 has a number of advantages over its predecessor. It is the best option that overcomes volume size limitation of other FAT versions. Sometimes, you may want to convert your file system from FAT16 to FAT 32, to take advantage of its enhanced features. However, you should be careful during conversion, as an interrupted or failed conversion process may lead to file system corruption and data loss. In such situations, FAT Data Recovery< solutions are required to extract lost data.

While converting your Windows 2000 hard drive's file system from FAT16 to FAT32, the process may fail halfway with the below error message:

“The type of the file system is FAT.
Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the drive drive, so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts. (Y/N)”

If you reboot your Microsoft Windows 2000 computer, file system conversion process appears to start, and then you come across the underwritten error message:

“FAT32 is not supported”

When you try to convert the file system through the command-line switch- “ drive1:convert drive2: /fs:fat32”, Windows may give you further error message stating:

“FAT32 is not a valid file system”

At this point, the conversion process halts and file system remains partially converted. In this state, neither the FAT16 nor the FAT32 file system can be used. It renders all your hard drive partitions and data inaccessible, causing serious data loss. In order to get your data recovered in such circumstances, you need to perform FAT Recovery by sorting it out.

Root of the problem

This issue only occurs on Windows 2000 computer as the operating system does not support conversion from FAT16 to FAT32.

Resolution

But, it removes all the data from hard drive and needs FAT Data Recovery software to handle the situation.
