There’s an amazing and often dizzying array of TV stands out there. In fact, it can be very difficult to choose what you’re looking for – because there are so many sizes and so many different storage options, you’ll find that TV stands and cabinets are easier to look on as a frivolous piece of furniture. In some cases though, they’re essential for the careful and exclusive storage of your television and other multimedia equipment.

Here’s why:

- Storage can save space – TV stands are designed to stack your gadgets in an easily accessible, and more importantly in most cases, a space saving way. If you’ve got a tall stack unit for your TV, with shelves for your digital box, Tivo or cable box, and space for your games console(s), you may find a TV stand takes up a lot less space than spreading them out.

- Storage can also work well with your other needs – it may not seem important right now, but if you’ve got a large DVD collection, you may want shelves that match or are integrated into the unit – this may help you pick from a wide range of products and narrow it down. Conversely, if you’ve already got a unit to store your multimedia materials (such as games/cds/dvds) it may guide you in matching your TV stand with other furniture, which may further guide you in selecting your furniture

- Starting from scratch and designing the perfect space in a new house - Then consider exactly that – space. You’ll find that space can be the best guiding factor when choosing anything. Small spaces benefit from corner TV stands, as do odd alcoves where your TV may be situated. You can also wall mount some TV’s and stands, which may solve even more space problems.

- If you’re replacing a unit, then consider finding a similar unit - It’s often important to people to keep a cohesive space in their living spaces, so if you had a style you liked, don’t be afraid to stick with it. Just remember that it has to be able to support your TV and everything that goes with it. And if the old stand is perfectly serviceable still, consider donating it to a local furniture charity.

- Storage shouldn’t be a chore – and in most cases, furniture shops can give you advice, but you should always check online for similar styles, just in case you can save some money. Having a piece delivered may seem like overkill, but sometimes you’ll find the exact same piece online, for far less. Don’t be afraid to shop around.

Whatever the choice of TV stand, it’s important to be confident that it will hold the weight of your TV and other items. If your stand is too flimsy it may be unsuitable for your needs.
