Five Simple Steps To Redecorating Your Conservatory - By: Jamie Simpson

A conservatory or greenhouse can be a challenging area to decorate. It receives vastly more sunlight than other areas and may be largely taken up spatially by plants. These create something of a décor of their own. Nevertheless a conservatory can be a fun and stimulating area in which to enjoy family time and have fun generally.

Take Preliminary measurements

One of the first things you should do is to take preliminary measurements of any sort that you think may be necessary during the redecorating job. Measure window heights and widths, floor areas, floor to ceiling heights, and any other measurements you think might prove useful. You can use these measurements when purchasing furniture, floor coverings and window treatments.

Start with Floor Coverings and Window Treatments

Speaking of the above, rugs and window treatments (i.e. curtains, drapes, or blinds) are a good place to begin. Though you can use curtains and drapes over conservatory windows, it may be difficult to keep them from getting sun bleached or damp. For this reason it is often best to consider conservatory blinds. These are either large blinds that attach to the roof of a conservatory or smaller blinds that work like other slatted or roller blinds and are designed for windows of the conservatory size. Conservatory blinds are well suited to the conservatory environment and can be purchased in a wide range of styles, colours, and sizes to fit the construction and décor of your conservatory.
For floor coverings consider rugs that have a stylistic continuity both with the window treatments and with other dominant colours and form themes in the conservatory such as various plants and flowers.

Furnish with Modern Furniture

In order to update the furniture in the conservatory, it can be a good idea to use modern furniture. This is of course a fairly broad category. Usually modern furniture is considered anything that departs from traditional styles to a marked degree. There is a wide variety of stunning modern furniture that can really improve and update the look of a conservatory if it is well chosen. Again, try to match window, rug, and plant colours and themes or complement them in some way. Also keep in mind that conservatories get a lot of sun and are sometimes damp, so you may want to get moisture and sun resistant furniture if possible.

Art

Next you may want to consider art. Modern or classic paintings (or prints thereof) can be brought in to match the modern furniture and other design elements. You may also want to consider sculptures, which again may be either modern looking or classic. Try to create stylistic continuity with the artwork and the rest of the décor, but remember that a lot of modern decoration uses eclecticism to a marked degree, so just because you have modern tables, chairs, and sofas in the conservatory doesn't necessarily mean the art has to be modern also.

Try Several Arrangements

Finally, you can try out several arrangements of the elements above until you reach the right décor. See what looks best and works well in terms of flow, rhythm, balance, symmetry, and focus. Your conservatory should be spacious enough to maintain its sense of large airiness and should never feel cluttered. The right furniture, window coverings, rugs, and artwork can all add up to an integrated design that keeps the conservatory feel while also being an inviting and elegant space for a number of different activities.
