When was the last time you had a full night’s sleep? Many Americans can’t remember. In a perfect world, you would wake up without the help of an alarm, but simply because your body was done with sleep, and was full of energy, ready to get up and face the day. Sleep is a biological necessity, not something we sneak in when we have time in our schedule.

Our bodies need sleep, plain and simple. Unfortunately, amidst the busy schedules of most people’s day to day life, a full night’s sleep is often sacrificed on the altars of work, partying, or just responsibilities in general. To compensate, we fill our bodies with energy drinks and coffee all day, just to stay alert and deal with everything we have to get done. Is it any wonder that sleep aids are a billion dollar a year business? It’s time to make a stand for sleep, and we’re here to help!

Here are 5 easy tips to help you get a good night’s sleep and wake up refreshed:

1. Set a bedtime. Your body works best when it has a set routine for doing things, and this is no different when it comes to sleep. By setting a bedtime for yourself and sticking to it, your body will naturally start to get into the habit of relaxing and shutting down at a certain time each night.

2. Do something you like for an hour before going to bed. This should not be anything that you HAVE to do. The idea here is to be free of deadlines and stress, and to just spend time doing something you love. Studies show that doing something you enjoy releases hormones that help to release stress and help you relax. Examples of this include playing music, reading, writing, or just talking with friends.

3. Meditate. Since ancient times, people from every corner of the world have used meditation to relax, focus, and and gain inner peace. Meditating is one of the oldest and most powerful stress-relieving techniques known to man. Spend 5-10 minutes before bed sitting comfortably, and try to focus on clearing your mind and relaxing. Your quality of sleep will surely improve!

4. Stop eating 2-3 hours before going to sleep. An easy way to improve your quality of sleep is to stop going to bed on a full stomach. This way, the energy that would be used for the digestion process can instead be used to repair and restore the parts of your body that need it the most.

5. Make a list of the top 5 things you have to get done tomorrow. This gets these things out of your head and allows your mind to stop trying to remember them. You’ll be amazed at how fast you’ll relax once your to-do list is on paper.
