Why is it sometimes difficult to successfully fish during the day? Well, most fish tend to stick close to the shore, hiding and avoiding their various predators. This is not to say that you will never catch a fish during the day, but avid fishermen know that most fish are more active and feeding around 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., when they have the protection of the dark.

For fishermen who prefer to go fishing in the dark hours of a day, there are certain tools that will make their fishing expedition run more smoothly. All fishermen should have lures, hooks, bait, a net, and an efficient LED flashlight and/or headlamp. Having LED flashlights and headlamps are useful for everything from baiting your hook to cleaning your fish to navigating your way around the area. Especially for those who prefer to fish at night, an LED flashlight is a necessity.

There are hundreds of books and guides for choosing the proper gear and gadgets, such as fishing lure, for fishermen, but it can sometimes be difficult to know what kind of flashlight would best fit this kind of activity. Here is a simple guide for selecting the appropriate LED flashlights and headlamps for your next night fishing adventure:

Avoid Spooking Fish, Go Green

The common LED flashlights that emit white light are perfect for camping excursions, but avid fishermen are more drawn to green LED flashlights. The green light doesn't spook the fish and your eyes can adjust better to the blue-green light spectrum at night as night vision makes them more sensitive. Some products claim that the green light can actually attract fish to your boat.

Red Light and Night Vision

Night vision is very sensitive, so switching on a sudden, bright, white LED flashlight will compromise the night vision of those fishing around you as well as your own. In order to respect and preserve the night vision of those around you and provide you with some light, it would be best to use an LED flashlight that emits red light.

Ultraviolet light is also quite popular for fishing trips. Just be careful not to shine this light into your companions' eyes, as it can cause vision damage.

Fishing Torches and Water Resistance

Some fishermen do rely on using green LED flashlights to attract fish. They claim to draw in the fish by immersing the green light under the water. Even if you don't plan to submerge your LED flashlight or headlamp, it's important that they be water resistant as you will most likely get them wet while you are fishing.

Headlamps: Excellent Tools for Cleaning Your Catch

Headlamps are essential gadgets that will make your fishing adventure a lot easier. When you are fishing, there are so many manual tasks that require the use of your hands. Headlamps take that stress away as you can still have a light source and the use of both your hands at the same time. Again, don't flash the light into anyone's eyes, it could damage their vision.

Fish tend to be spooked by light. It is recommended that you keep excessive light away from the surface of the water when you are fishing in order to not scare away the fish. Green light is the exception, but keep in mind that most light emitted from LED flashlights will frighten off the fish.
