Fishing Tackle from Sportfish.co.uk - By: Gareth Hoyle1

If you are just starting out with fishing then it is a good idea to keep your tackle to a minimum. This will provide you with a cost effective entry level into this sport and will give you a chance to decide if you like fishing before you invest in any expensive equipment.

Rod and Reel

You can spend a lot of money on the top range rods and reels but until you have built up your skill level and experience they will not benefit you any more than the standard equipment. When you are just starting out you will not have any preference for equipment set up so it is best to start off with standard rods and reels until you find your own style. Spinner reels are the easiest to use for beginners and are an affordable option. If you are choosing a rod the average adult fishing rod is around 6 feet long and a rod length between 4 and 5 feet long would be suitable for a child.

Fishing Line

There are an overwhelming array of fishing lines (filament) on offer in a variety of different sizes and strengths. Fishing lines are measured in pound-test ratios and basically the larger this figure the stronger the fishing line will be and the larger the species of fish you can catch. The important part of choosing a fishing line is to get one that matches your rod and reel. Most beginner's rod and reel sets are lightweight and use spinning reels that are suitable for a maximum 8 pound-test line. If you are a bit more experienced and have moved onto a larger rod and a bait casting reel then you can choose much heavier options of anywhere up to a thirty pound test line. In general though you should not need more than a 16 pound test line. Don't forget that the larger the line the more likely it is the fish will spot it and stay away from your bait not matter how tempting it may be.

Fishing Net

Many beginners forget to get a fishing net but this is a handy tool when you are trying to land your catch successfully. Nets are also useful if you are fishing with young children so that they can amuse themselves in the shallows netting small fish whilst waiting for a bite.

Bait

You can spend a lot of money on exotic live bait such as soft shelled crabs and shrimp so it is best to research what the fish species you are most likely to encounter on your fishing trip will take before you spend any money. In most cases you can catch fish with cheaper bait such as nightcrawlers (earthworms), mealworms, grubs and even bread balls.
