Finite life span of mobile phone means they can fetch good money when you have finished with them - By: Felicity Lightbody

Phone recycling has become a big business these days and there are basically 2 reasons for this. The first and obvious reason is that phones have become extremely popular but they have a finite life span. This means at some point of time they will have to be thrown away. Not only that, consumers need to keep upgrading their equipment. Needless to say this is not good for the environments. This is because phones are manufactured using poisonous chemicals. The other reason behind the popularity of phone recycling is that it is also a profitable business.

Once a person stops using a phone, there are usually two scenarios that happen. In most cases it will either get stored away in some dusty closet, or tossed into a trash bin. Both of these are not good options. The more responsible thing to do is either give it to a non-profit organization or to phone recycling company. This way with a little maintenance it can be used by someone else. There are plenty of charitable institutions that specialize in this. The next option is to sell it to a phone recycling company and this is perhaps the most responsible thing to do.

As mentioned before, toxic substances such as heavy metals are used for manufacturing phones. Each year millions of phones are bought and the total amount of phone in use today is close to a billion! Needless to say this is a huge amount of toxic substances floating around out there. The sad part is that only around ten percent of these phones will be recycled. The good news is that a phone is not made entirely from toxic substances. It also has precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum hidden in its circuit boards! In fact on a per gram basis, a kilo of phones will have more gold contained in it than a kilo of gold ore! Even the plastic used for the phone casing can be recycled.

So from all of this it is easy to see why even from a business stand point phone recycling is becoming a profitable business. The important thing to remember here is, NEVER try to extract these metals on your own. It should be done by a trained professional. Other wise the risk of coming into contact with harmful chemicals is just too great. There are plenty of professional phone recycling specialists nowadays, and with the help of the internet it should be easy to find one near you.
