Sleep is the first casualty whenever a person faces major life changes, e.g. a new baby on the scene, relationship problems, employment issues or just a shift in routines. It is a well documented fact that one of the first signs of depression or stress is losing the ability to have and enjoy a good night’s sleep, and to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever the day may bring. It is not surprising that sleep depravation is used as a means of torture in some parts of the world.

Sleep is an essential part of our lives although the amount needed varies from person to person. Some new born babies sleep for twenty hours out of twenty four, while others will only sleep for twelve. As a parent you will find that you cherish every moment of your child’s day but none more than the moments where they actually sleep long enough for you to get some sleep! I love my kids but I will be the first to admit that since they came into my live, my sleep has never been the same. They are actually very good about going to bed and sleeping through the night but I have found that my sleep has become so light that even if the door to my bedroom is opened very quietly, I will wake up immediately and then have trouble nodding off again.

It is while we are asleep that our bodies regenerate and replenish our energy levels and make any small healing repairs needed. Our minds are also given the chance to have a break from the stresses and anxieties, allowing us to wake up refreshed and ready to face the new day. However if our sleep is of a poor quality or an insufficient quantity we can end up feeling as though we have not been to bed at all. To avoid this feeling there are a few tips we can follow, regarding diet and sleep habits.

Avoid eating a heavy meal two hours before bedtime, also caffeine, alcohol and spicy food, and keep the bedroom at a cool temperature, also ensuring that lighting is low and sounds are muted. Many people find that a warm milky drink helps them to relax and sleep better. Having a comfortable mattress and bedding is also important and I have found that the new cheap memory foam mattress which is available these days is a worthwhile investment as it improves the quality of my sleep, if not the quantity!

Every morning I struggle to escape from the clutches of my Hungarian goose down duvet and try to block out the sight of the matching Hungarian goose down pillows beckoning me back to rest my head on them. I had brought these luxury items at a bed linen sale earlier in the year as a birthday treat for myself, but somehow never have the time to devote to them that I want.
