Fibromyalgia Causes & Cures - By: Dr. Kevin Smith

Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome involving widespread pain throughout the body. Additionally, fibromyalgia sufferers may also have chronic fatigue, morning stiffness, sleep disturbances, constipation, diarrhea, light sensitivity, urinary tract infections, and heart racing. The condition affects 6 million Americans each year, 4 million of whom are women. However the symptoms are identical for women and men alike. 90% of those affected are between the ages of 40 and 60.

Fibromyalgia is most notably characterized by tender points which occur in multiple locations throughout the body. Pain and tenderness are the classic means of diagnosis. However, a thorough examination (which includes checking the joints, muscles, range of motion, posture, and nervous system) is important for an accurate diagnosis.

There are numerous causes for fibromyalgia. The classic ones include traumas, toxins and mental stress. Traumas include major traumas such as car accidents, sports injuries, slips and falls and work related injuries. Micro traumas include abnormal posture, repetitive stress injuries and poor ergonomics.

Fibromyalgia symptoms can come from chemical stressors such as sugar, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, MSG, aspartame, artificial colors, a viral infection, as well as vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. Common deficiencies include thiamine, magnesium, manganese, Malic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin E. Additionally, widespread body inflammation may be occurring due to an imbalance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

Mental stress may occur due to anxiety, financial problems, marital problems, depression, boredom, loneliness, lack of purpose in life, etc..).

A holistic approach to curing fibromyalgia should include the following:

1. Exercise (30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise 3-4 days per week)

2. Eliminating chemical irritants (which may involve a 10-28 day detox program to rid the body of accumulated toxins).

3. Whole food nutrition diet (eating foods in their most raw, natural form – with a heavy focus on organic produce).

4. Nutritional supplements (including fish oils and a high quality supplement formula which includes thiamine, magnesium, manganese, Malic acid, vitamin E and vitamin B6).

5. Chiropractic care (which improves joint function, corrects the posture, restores normal range of motion and flexibility and removes pressure on the nervous system caused by misaligned vertebrae).
