Fernandina Beach Charter Sport Fishing Species - By: emoryhubach

The State of Florida is the place to go if you are looking for an adventure. The clear blue water is calm from the surface, but brimming with excitement underneath. There is so much fun to be had whether onshore or off. Florida is particularly a wonderful place to go sport fishing, and here are some of the species you can catch in a fishing event.

The red snapper can be found near shore when going "inshore" or "jetty" fishing. The Lutjanus campechanus is found in the Gulf of Mexico and sometimes in the northern parts of the Atlantic Coast of the United States. It is a very large fish with prominent reddish scales. The red snapper has large eyes, mouth, and lips, but often confused with the rockfish (genus Sebastes).

The Southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma) is a species of flatfish known for its flat face with two eyes on one side of its face. The Paralichthys lethostigma is one of the many flounder species sharing the same traits. Like the red snapper, the Southern flounder can be found in relatively shallow waters. The flounder lies on its side, usually covering itself with sand to hide from predators.

Some shark species may be caught in Fernandina Beach fishing charters as well. The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) is by far the most famous. This medium-sized gray shark can grow from eight to eleven feet long. The beautiful tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is of roughly the same size and mass as the bull shark. However, the tiger shark is a nocturnal hunter, which brings some anglers to hunt for it at night. The lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) is another beautiful specimen of roughly the same size. It is recognizable by its yellowish hue.

Further out in the open sea, there are larger fish to catch, and the enormous wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) is one of them. The wahoo can grow as long as eight feet and weigh as heavy as 180 pounds. It owes its speed to its slender torpedo-like shape. Fernandina Beach fishing guides can help anglers distinguish the wahoo from the similar king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla), which also has a silvery, bluish color.

The tuna is a prized fish in many Fernandina Beach fishing charters. The blackfin tuna (Thunnus atlanticus) is the most abundant species in Florida, while being the smallest tuna species. The Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) can also be found in the area, normally spawning in nearby Gulf of Mexico. The bluefin tuna is prized for its flesh, which is commonly served as sashimi.
