Female mechanical engineering student to build world’s fastest car - By: Brigette Federico

A mechanical engineering project to build the world’s fastest car will be overseen by 25 of the best engineers around.
One of those chosen to help with the mechanical design of the vehicle known as Bloodhound Supersonic has surprised a lot of people.

That is because a female mechanical engineering student will be joining a male team to build a car that is hoped to set the world land speed record in 2012.

22-year-old Jenna Gaff who hails from Scotland is currently studying Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and is due to start her Masters in September.

She is one of only two students who have been picked to work on the project which aims to develop a car that can travel at speeds of up to 1,000mph.

Being chosen to work on such an important project has surprised her just as much as it seems to surprise other people.
Speaking to The Edinburgh Evening News she said: “Whenever I’m out at Bloodhound exhibits, guys tend to think I am the face of the car or that I work in the admin section.”

However despite the strange and enquiring looks, Jenna has continued to work hard on the project and is currently working on the pedals and cooling system.

She added: “I think it’s an opportunity to show people that cars and tools aren’t just for boys.
“I’ve really enjoyed building up the car and I hope working here helps to challenges the stereotype commonly held.”
Sometimes working up to 12 hours a day, Jenna is determined to make the project a success and become known for helping develop the fastest car on earth.

The member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Scottish Region also admits that she was never really a girly girl and was always interested in things such as cars and planes from a very young age.

Now, she even jokes that she is handier with a toolbox than her boyfriend, Andrew claiming that she is good at DIY and maintaining her car.

Despite being about to start a Masters in September, Jenna plans to devote a lot of time to the Bloodhound project and is even hoping to speak to other young people about the possibilities of a career in engineering.

Project Director, Richard Noble is also keen to stress the importance of the project for developing young talent.

He writes on the project’s website: “The Bloodhound Project is the engineering adventure for the 21st century.

“We are pushing the limits and inspiring our young engineers and scientists with our incredible car capable of 1,000mph.”
Other members of the team taking part in the project include chief engineer Mark Chapman and chief of aerodynamics, Ron Ayers.

In an attempt to bring engineering to a wider audience and introduce it to younger people, the Bloodhound SCC education adventure will help inspire engineers of the future. By making the Bloodhound Education Programme available to students from schools all over the country, over 3,500 schools have already registered in its first 15 months.
