Farm Security - By: Security Solutions

Farm security can be a big issue for many farmers. A farmers land can cover huge areas, they keep very expensive farming machinery and in many cases have a large store of diesel.

Faming equipment is very expensive, and also very desirable. Every year farmers are targeted for their valuable farming equipment such as quad bikes, pickup trucks, tractors & their trailing equipment, lawn mowers and pressure washers. While some of these can be easily sold on by the thief, some may be stolen, broken down and sold as scrap metal.

Items such as lawnmowers, pressure washers and garden strimmers are easy for thieves to steal due to them being lightweight so can be taken very quickly and very quietly. They can also be sold on easily.
This may sound worrying, but there are many things that can be done to secure these. It’s very easy and cheap to mark all your property clearly with your postcode so that in the unfortunately event that it is stolen it can be identified easily.
If you can secure chains to the wall or floor of your barns or storage areas so that you can lock up these easy to move items.

Keep locks on all your farm gates. Especially the ones that lead to yards or anywhere that tools or machinery may be stored. This may not stop all thieves but may deter some and will slow down the others. The others who do will have to make some noise to get past these locks which may be enough to alert someone who can call the police.

It is also a good idea to keep your barns locked. Again this may deter some intruders and if not they will have to make some noise to get inside and most thieves will not want to make alert anyone to them. Plus, if your barns are always locked, potential thieves can’t look inside to see what equipment you have prior to attempting to steal it. If they don’t know for sure what’s inside, they may be reluctant to break in.

Areas which are dark at night such as alley ways, lanes, driveways and yards are potential areas for unwanted intruders to lurk. Areas like this can be made secure quite easily with the addition of a light source. Either a dusk till dawn light that stays on constantly all night or a PIR security light which is only activated should there be any movement in that area. There are two types of PIR security lights, ones which need wiring to the mains power and ones which don’t. Obviously there are some areas of a farm which are quite remote and tend not to have a mains power supply. This is where a solar powered security light will work perfectly as it requires no mains wiring to power it so it can be installed almost anywhere.

Installing security cameras is also a good idea. Although this may not put off all thieves, you should be able to get a good idea of who broke into your property and what they took. This is valuable evidence for the police so it is a good idea to invest in a high quality system if you can afford it. If you can’t, then installing realistic dummy CCTV cameras is a cheap alternative and is something I certainly recommend doing as this may be enough to deter potential intruders.

Lastly, farm diesel is a very expensive and desirable commodity. It is usually kept in big containers outside where anyone can get to it. The first thing to do with yours is to fit a lock to the nozzle. This will stop anyone taking this fuel easily. The second is to try to hide your diesel store from prying eyes. Erecting a simple fence, or planting some bushes around the fuel tank will do the trick. Try not to hide it too well though in case you never find it again.
If you find that there is no way to hide your diesel tank, then fitting a security light and CCTV camera aimed directly at it should be enough to put off most thieves.

Following these simple security solutions to your farm may be all it takes to deter any potential thieves and save you money, time and inconvenience.
