Fancy dress was the name on the game at the Cowtown Carnival - By: Nick Campbell

A festival held in the south of England recently saw men, women and children don fancy dress in a bid to get into the spirit of the celebration.

The annual Cowtown Carnival took place in St Mary's Park and hundreds of revellers got involved in the action, the South Devon Herald Express reports.

Each year, Brixham hosts the event as a reminder of when the town was split into two marshy areas with only a lane to connect them.

A range of activities are put on and attendees are encouraged to wear fancy dress costumes.

During the 2010 festival, entertainment was provided by youth rock band Eden and magician Ozzy D. In addition, there was a dog show and agility display.

Also, the park had an inflatable assault course, bouncy castle, donkey rides and plenty of stalls available for people to peruse.

For those who worked up a thirst and an appetite while in their fancy dress, there were also a barbeque, tea tents and a bar.

Meanwhile, in the evening, 11 floats and eight groups of pedestrians gathered for the carnival parade, which wound its way to the town centre, around the harbour and back up to the park.

Among those involved was Kieran Moore, who scooped the prize for best children's pedestrian by wearing his "fantastic" flying machine fancy dress costume.

Others to achieve success on the day were individuals from All Saints Church, who were selected to win the children's float section for their interpretation of Moses Parting the Red Sea.

Commenting on the proceedings, event organiser Megan Hart said they were a great success, adding: "We were very pleased with how it all went.

"It was a bit slow to start with but by 14:00 BST it started filling up and by the end the park was packed. We had 87 entries in the dog show, which was a record. The highest we've had was 70 so we were dead chuffed with that."
