John Constable is clearly one of the most crucial and progressive English painters since the middle ages and he played a key role in the progression of art from the middle ages, through Baroque into the modern art movements that we enjoy today. This article discusses Constable paintings and the qualities that they brought to the art world.

The artist has made a name for himself through his landscape art, but he was forced to dabble with other art depictions due to the financial constraints that we all experience during our lives. Constable was no different, and accurate portraits were his bread and butter at the time, helping to pay the bills and provide him with time and finance to pursue his real passions once each was completed. This opportunity brought us the likes of Boat-building near Flatford Mill, The Leaping Horse, The Cornfield and The Hay Wain. The Hay Wain, Wivenhoe Park, Salisbury Cathedral. These are still probably Constable's best works to date.

Fellow artist JMW Turner alongside John Constable helped to shape the more traditional, stuffy art styles into a more expressive, creative and brighter set of art movements which inspired the rise of impressionist art and also other famous European artists. They would take this on further to take us up to the present day. Constable helped to bring about the art public's passion for landscape art, alongside other artists from the UK and Europe.

Before that point portrait and religious paintings were frequent but eventually art fans grew to respect paintings of British landscapes and this spread to all the corners of the globe.

French artists like Monet, Pissarro and Gustave Caillebotte underlined the importance of landscape paintings pre-20th century, but it was even earlier artists such as Constable and Turner who started it's rise.

Constable's most impressive paintings were Dedham Vale and The Hay Wain of 1821. Constable's career can be optimised into around 70 best works. It is certain that Constable's oil paintings left quite an impression on us all and is an important subject for study of British art. It also shows the rise of modern contemporary art across Europe.

Constable and Turner will always be respected across Britain for delivering oil paintings which helped to develop art movements and it is fair to say that they still inspire modern artists today. The careers of these artists are regularly exhibited in British and American museums and galleries.
