The counties of Devon and Cornwall in the South West region of England are both perfect places for family holidays. They both possess a wide selection of beaches, family attractions and family orientated hotels in Devon and other family friendly accommodation.

Getting to Devon
Devon is quite an easy place to get to – you don’t have to take a long haul flight half way across the world in order to enjoy your holiday...

Train: Getting the train from London Paddington to Devon takes between 2 ½ and 3 ½ hours depending where in Devon you wish to stay. Virgin trains run two routes into Devon from the North West, North East and Scotand.

Car: Taking the car down to Devon will take you approximately 4- 5 hours from London, 1-2 hours from Bristol and 3-4 hours from Southampton.

Plane: You can also fly down to Exeter from many national airports and Plymouth also has its own airport which you can fly to. However, it is advisable for you to hire a car as there are many places to explore which involve you using a car.

Family Accommodation in Devon:
Devon has a range of family friendly accommodation dotted throughout the county. If you prefer to come and go as you please and don’t want to be tied down with getting up for breakfast at a certain time then a self catering holiday would be perfect. There are so many self catering cottages situated in the countryside and by the coast, or caravans and camping which are perfect for family get-togethers. Alternatively family friendly Devon hotels are becoming more and more available which are particularly designed just with the family in mind. Some are equipped with baby monitors, high chairs, children’s books, DVD’s and some even have certain times for children’s tea.

There are many things to do in Devon for all the family, from family beaches, attractions and historical sites.

Devon has some of the best beaches in the UK which are perfect for family days. Beaches such as Bantham, Bigbury and Blackpool Sands on the south coast and Croyde Bay and Braunton Sands on the north coast. Such beaches are perfect for picnics, paddling, rock pooling and family sports such as cricket, rounder’s and volleyball.

There are a number of family adventure parks in Devon which include Woodlands Leisure Park, Crealy Adventure Park and Babbacombe Model Village and are all located in the south of Devon. North Devon has parks such as Watermouth Castle and Theme Park and Milky Way Adventure Park.

For a day out with nature there are a number of attractions to choose from across Devon including Paignton Zoo and Exmoor Zoo, The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Buckfast Butterflies and Otter Sanctuary in Buckfastleigh and the Miniature Pony Sanctuary in Newton Abbot.

For an educational day out with the family there are a number of historical sites such as the Bygones Victorian Museum in Torquay, Exeter’s Underground Passages and castles such as Dartmouth, Okehampton and Totnes.
