Fad diets and bad breath - By: Geraldine Smith

Everyone remembers when the Atkins Diet was at its peak. This supposedly miracle weight loss programme did prove remarkably successful; so much so that I was tempted to give it a try for a short while. I say a short while, because I soon noticed one very unpleasant side effect of the all protein diet - bad breath. Actually, it was a good friend of mine who pointed it out, after it had been discussed at length at work for some time. I was so embarrassed when I found out that I ditched the Atkins there and then and resolved never again to try fad diets that might have scary side effects!

Changing your diet dramatically and quickly may have implications for the rest of your body that you haven't considered. Bad breath is just one of these and is actually surprisingly difficult to deal with. Bear in mind, that if you have bad breath usually, and it hasn't just been brought on by a change in diet, then you should probably go and see your family dentist to see if they can isolate the problem. Bad breath for no reason can be an indication of tooth decay and oral infections, which need to be treated before they cause too any damage to your teeth!

However, if your bad breath has mysteriously coincided with a decision to eat strange mixtures of food or unusual combinations on one plate, then the chances are that your food is more to blame than your oral hygiene. If a diet is working for you, it can be difficult to give it up, no matter what the reason. Try brushing your teeth after every meal, and using mouthwash and dental floss too. This has the added bonus of keeping your mouth fresh so you are less likely to crave snacks in between meals! Breath mints and mouth sprays will only mask the problem, and can often end up smelling worse when the bad breath stink starts to break through...

If the problem is becoming so bad it's starting to affect your social or work life, it might be time to accept that this isn't the diet for you. It does seem that bad breath is an issue that is more related to extreme diets than those which incorporate a balanced diet, especially those which include lots of fruit and vegetables, which are a natural halitosis killer. Try and avoid diets which stick to one food group, no matter how successful they seem. Aside from the likelihood that you will develop unpleasant bad breath, these diets tend not to be doing your insides much good either. After all, where do you think that diet-related halitosis starts off?
