Face Recognition Technology: How Does It Work - By: Swaty Shah

Biometry is the buzz word in the world of security. It is the most reliable means of identity verification. The use of this technology is increasing day by day. Accuracy in identity verification is the main reason behind. If you are using a biometric security system like a fingerprint reader, face recognition system, voice recognition device, iris scanner, or other, you can rest assured. You may never face the problem of identity theft in your premise. The unique and permanent parts of the body are taken into consideration for identity verification by such devices.

Face recognition, in particular, is the most accurate in terms of identity verification. No two individuals can have exactly the same face structure; not even identical twins! This application can distinguish between two faces on the basis of the geometry of the face. Features such as distance between the two eyes, distance between the eyes and the nose, length of the forehead, shape of the jaws, and others are taken into consideration. Accuracy is maintained during recognition owing to such in-depth analysis. Errors in identity verification are next to impossible with a face recognition application.

Every face recognition system follows a certain algorithm. There are eighty unique nodal points on the face that can be taken into consideration by this application. Any number of them can be taken into consideration by the system for storage as face templates. The user needs to first enroll into the face recognition application. Face templates for the user are stored in the database at this stage. Next time onwards, the enrolled user simply needs to look before the camera. His facial structure will be tallied against the templates stored in the database and he will thus be recognized.

Any typical face recognition system follows the steps given below to recognize faces:

*The camera attached to the application searches the field of view for faces. It is ready to process the face that comes in its field of view within a fraction of seconds.

*If there is a face in the field of view, the camera checks whether it is in alignment. The user needs to be facing the camera for the system to continue the recognition process.

*The system translates the face into a unique code. This code is made up of numbers and so are all the facial details in the database. It is tallied against the ones stored in the database.

If the newly acquired facial details are found matching with any of the templates stored in the database, the identity of the person is established as per the details associated with that template. Every template requires the user to fill in the basic details with a face template. On completing the transaction, the screen will display the details of the enrolled user. This is how a classic face recognition application works. It is an advanced application and makes use of complex algorithm to identify faces. However, the basic functioning of the face recognition system takes place in this manner.
